Technique Classes

Every technique class has a set curriculum focusing on the basics during the first part of the training season and gradually increases in difficulty over the course of the year. Faculty are required to submit lesson plans every month and discuss them with the Artistic Director to ensure the highest quality of training for the students.

Ballet

Sound ballet techniques derived from the Russian Vaganova School and the ABT Curriculum comprise the primary instructional curriculum. An additional component, unique to classical methods of ballet training, infuses aspects of martial arts, rhythmic gymnastics, and Pilates. Borrowing practices from these disciplines assists student dancers in building core strength and developing flexibility - essential traits for successful dancers. NUEVO’s innovative and unmatched ballet instructional program is designed to develop the impeccably trained dancer.

Modern

A style that combines selected aspects from codified modern techniques such as Horton, Graham, and Limon, representative of the concert dance world. NUEVO’s modern classes are based on the belief that the fundamentals of learning to be grounded and using the floor correctly are key elements in the additional development and understanding of multi-dimensional movement, timing, and musicality. These are all important aspects required for the full comprehension and appreciation of modern dance.

Lyrical/Contemporary

This style of dance focuses on the expression and interpretation of music through movement. The style, depending on the choreographer, can be profound, physical, and emotional, and challenges the dancer to visually communicate what they feel within. It is an important method of teaching dancers to fully express their feelings through movement and instills a kinesthetic sense of fluidity.

Musical Theater

Musical Theater is a cabaret movement style important in the overall training of the dancer, especially for students who choose to focus on the commercial end of the dance world, and particularly for Broadway productions. Students learn to interact to selected music with attitude, flair, personality, and finesse. This class is highly geared towards movements with a heavy emphasis on stylized performances, focusing significantly on entertainment, and interacting with the audience through mime-like choreography.

Hip-Hop

Currently the hottest and most popular style of dance, this genre is derived from diverse ethnic, cultural, and street forms of movement. Different styles of this particular genre are taught and determined according to the instructor’s experience and interpretative methodology. This form of dancing is most identified with the commercial (entertainment) world including performing for popular artists and musicians in television, film and the music industries.

Turn & Leaps

A technique class that specializes in concentrated development of excellent technique to perform pirouettes and a variety of jumps. The class focuses on exercises that address issues necessary for strong turns such as building a strong core, practicing correct upper and lower body placement, and spotting. The class also focuses on building strength in the legs for jumps to ensure correct technique and preventing injuries from landing incorrectly.
